Philosophical Analysis
The theme of the seminar is philosophical analysis: roughly, the use of philosophical methods to answer “What is X?” questions. The paradigmatic method of philosophical analysis is conceptual analysis by the method of cases, but relevant methods also include linguistic analysis, metaphysical analysis, experimentally informed analysis, and other methods for evaluating philosophical theories. The seminar will cover both defenses and critiques of various methods of analysis.
The first meeting (Tuesday September 3) will be a full-length meeting devoted to an overview of the issues and our viewpoints on them (no advance reading is necessary for this meeting). Subsequent meetings will each involve a philosopher who will supply material to read in advance and who will not give a presentation.
